Understand what morality is and how it differs from aesthetics ,non moral behavior and manners.
Understand to whom morality applies .
Knowing the difference between morality and law.
Know why you should be moral .
ETHICS AND MORALITY
These are words used frequently by us in our everyday life, especially morality. Most especially in this part of the world Africa ,morality is only measured only for the realm of sexuality on the other hand Ethics and Unethical is used when discussing how business and professional communities should behave towards their members or the public.
ETHICS is derived from the Greek word ETHOS “ Meaning “ CHARACTER”.
MORALS from the Latin word MORALIS meaning “CUSTOM OR MANNERS” .
ETHICS pertains to the individual character of a person ,hw he behaves while MORALITY points to the relationship among human beings. In philosophy, however the term ethics is als used to refer to a specific area of study _ the area of morality, which concentrates or talks about human conduct and human values.
When a person or individual is said to be moral or ethical , it means he or she is a good person and when talking about immoral or unethical ,we mean that the person is a bad person. When we refer to human actions under these categories MORALS , ETHICAL, IMMORAL OR UNETHICAL it simply means that they are right or wrong or good or bad.
Two other important terms I will like to tell u about are AMORAL and. NON MORAL.
AMORAL means having no moral sense or finding it hard to differentiate between right and wrong actions/ activities. Some people who have had prefrontal lobotomy tends to act amorally after the operation. Babies are also classified as AMORAL because they are yet to have moral sense when they are educated about morality.
Compare to what is happening in Nigeria , the boko haram . The question is that are they suffering from amorality ? Or Do u think they cannot differentiate between right and wrong.
The word NON MORAL means out of the realm of morality altogether, for example inanimate objects such as cars and guns etc things without feelings and reasoning are neither moral or immoral. For instance when you carry a gun or car it is left to you to use it morally or immorally but the things themselves are non moral.
Summary
An immoral person knowingly violates human standards by doing something wrong or being bad. While the AMORAL person may also violate moral standards but not knowingly since he or she has no moral sense . Something that is non moral can neither be good or bad or do anything right or wrong because it doesn’t fall within the scope of morality.
A working definition of morality or ethics :
Morality deals basically with humans and how they relate to other beings both human and non human . It deals with how humans treat each other to promote mutual welfare , growth ,creativity and meaning in a striving for what is good over what is wrong.
There are four aspects of morality:
1. Religious morality
2. Natural morality
3. Individual morality
4. Social morality.
